3.5 - i can see how many modern fantasy books were inspired by this

This book struck so many chords with me. I don't know what it is about the pulp era- Conan the Barbarian, Tarzan, John Carter- they just make me happy, inflame my love of reading, and inspire me to write.
I am simultaneously heartbroken and ecstatic that it took me this long to pick up Elric of Melnibone. Swords, sorcery, dark pacts with chaos gods, a simple and compelling fantasy world, destiny and fate tied in so simply with it all.
This book was a breath of fresh air for me. Unapologetic high fantasy and adventure, unmarred by attempts at subtlety or overexplaining, unabashadley dragging the reader along through a dying world.

I will absolutely read this again. I will recommend it to others, and I will be reading the sequels. This book is to me, at this time, a fantastic example of writing and one to study.

So, I finally got around to reading this one. I think maybe its one of those books that was great for its time, but doesn't hold up as well today. It holds up better than most from that era, to my mind. But, that still leaves room for improvement.

What I did like was the general since of "classic storytelling". In that I mean it felt very much like the old myths (Greek and Roman) that I read as a kid in the elementary school libraries. It kept a sense of wonder and enchantment.

I'm not sure I'll read all of Elric's adventures, but I'm glad to have joined him on this one.

It was a perfectly fine book and a speedy read. For a lack of a better word, I liked the vibes the author was able to conjure up. A vivid world.

I don't think it was bad but it also wasn't incredibly deep, which fair enough, it's 160 pages long with a lot of events distilled into that 160 pages.

Also, while Elric while begin to engage in 'corrupting' behaviour which escalates in it's seriousness, I don't think he was really ever an angel/nice bloke at the start of the book. Even though he doesn't engage in half of the horrible stuff his ancestors did.

Okay, there are certain rhythms to the writing that are quite stunning-- that sort of epic, dark fable feeling. Wonderful command of the simple, straightforward language and plenty of creativity. But half-way through I had no reason to continue reading.

I think this book might be required reading for a certain kind of reader. I wanted to love it. I did not.
