Un bon punt de partida de les històries d'Elric. Un punt estereotipic però la història es un excés d'imaginació i aventures. La màgia desborda per tots els capítols. Si ets un fan de la fantasia, aquesta saga es fundacional per al gènere modern.

The world, and Elric himself, are stuffed with some of the most imaginative and evocative elements I’ve read. The structure also works to subvert reader expectations. The only problem with these subversions was—at least for me—that they were only successful in so far as I am vaguely familiar with fantasy and cliches about the world. Loved the anti-hero angle and the fact that even at the end he still doesn’t listen to people who were consistently right about what he should do and it’ll all probably end terribly.

The subversions decoupled what I knew about that stuff so didn’t know the rules of the world enough to appreciate some of what was going on, probably. Both the villain and Elric’s love interest felt a bit one dimensional because they mostly were in service to irony and subversion that made the characters kinda meh.

As good as I remember it being when I read it in high school.

Cool intentional spin on some tropes.

Our lead character is the emperor of a failing evil empire, and even though he is mentally playing with philosophies of "guilt" and "justice" and "mercy," his role has set him firmly in charge of a people who are used to ten thousand years of power and self satisfaction. They demand of him to be the tyrant that would make their empire "great again." (Yeah.) So even though he is "good" on paper, he is "evil" in practice, which is a nice line to ride for a protagonist. It's only after he leaves his kingdom on an adventure for revenge and, yes, to rescue a damsel, that he is allowed to befriend some folk, and show that his character is actually quite a noble one.

I may go further into this series. It has a lot of old fantasy trappings that I don't quite enjoy as much these days, but if it keeps leaning into the neat musings of Evil As Duty and Tradition, I'll stay engaged.

Did not know what to expect with this one, but was very pleasantly surprised! A quick read, but the action never stopped! As soon as one major event happened, another was ramping up! Loved the back and forth between Elric and Yyrkoon as they constantly were trying to outdo each other.

For fans of high fantasy, quests and swords and elves and magic - this is a very fun read. Excited to continue with the series.
