I loved this book for so many reasons.  There are multiple POVs, all with distinct voices and incredible backstories.  There is something about a group of misfits, each with their own flaws and motivations, that really sets the tone for a fun adventure.  I didn't want it to end.

PLEASE go read this.

This book had so much potential, and it was such a letdown. I’ll be honest, I picked it up because it seemed like it would be a Six of Crows dupe, and I’d give anything to read that book again for the first time.

Well, this book tried a little bit to be Six of Crows… and failed so completely. The characters are so poorly developed, the writing is so simplistic, and the final twist… I saw it coming from miles away.

I’ve seen other reviews say the author didn’t trust her readers to figure anything out for themselves, and it’s so true. Every feeling the characters felt, every twist the story took, had to be repeated over and over again, hammered out from each character’s new perspective and served up to us on a silver platter that didn’t let us draw any of our own conclusions.

It was also pure insta-love on the part of all the couples, even the supposed “enemies to lovers.” Because all of the characters were too busy immediately sharing their tragic pasts with the reader, I didn’t feel any connection with them in the present, so none of the romances felt particularly impactful. Even though a few of the characters had interesting backstories, they were all about as distinct as white paper in terms of personalities.

The only thing that kept this book from being a 1 star was that sometimes, when it allowed itself to focus more on the plot, it had some decently written action (especially when the characters weren’t in physical proximity to one another and therefore couldn’t keep rehashing the same moment over and over). There were a few times when I kept turning pages with a bit more eagerness to see how the characters would get themselves out of some predicament. But the ending was so rushed and the payoff was so nonexistent that even the more exciting moments felt cheapened.
