I was pleased to pick up the original Dune story from where Frank Herbert left it when he died. It was a good continuation that sets up the last book and the last battle.

Now wait a minute… I thought this was the worst book ever written. The way Dune fans talk, Hunters of Dune is absolutely terrible and completely ruins Heretics and Chapterhouse. But I’m here to tell you that it’s really not that bad. I actually liked it. Is it the worst of the first 7 Dune books? Yeah, probably. But is it THAT much worse than Chapterhouse: Dune? Not really. I can very easily imagine things taking a turn for the worse in Sandworms of Dune. But on its own, Hunters of Dune is undeserving of the bad rap it gets.

The plot and pacing are overall very solid, and it naturally feels like a follow up to Chapterhouse. I can totally buy that this follows Frank Herbert’s original plan for Dune 7.

The characters are hit-or-miss. Murbella is good here, and so is Uxtal and most of the minor characters. The only character I really don’t love here is Sheeana, and that’s just a case of missed potential more than anything.

The Gholas from OG Dune were an interesting add and I totally think FH was going there with his version of Dune 7. But some of them (Baron Harkonnen, Dr. Yueh) felt a little forced. I’m okay with it now, but if Sandworms of Dune devolves into The Atreides vs Harkonnens AGAIN, then I will be annoyed.

The writing here is very simple but veering on bad at times, especially with dialogue. But I didn’t mind most of the time, since the simplicity made this book quick to read. And as someone whose attention span has been ruined by the internet, the very short chapters were pretty nice to me. It lacks the subtleties and big themes of FH’s writing, but that was mostly gone by Chapterhouse anyways.

This one kind of sucked. Kind of a convoluted overwritten mess.

sigh.

Debated whether or not this book deserves even a star, but decided otherwise people will think i forgot to rate it.

The characters in this display none of the intelligence or subtlety of the original characters, and the book reads almost like a giant ad for the other Brian Herbert/Kevin J. Anderson books - if you read this having only read the original Dune series you might find yourself a bit lost.

Sometimes I wish that I was still tortured with the Chapterhouse cliffhanger instead of being subjected to these sequels.

DID NOT FINISH: 30%

Maybe I shouldn't have started it directly after Chapterhouse Dune, but it's amateurish, poorly written, and lacks the depth of Frank Herbert's writing and characterisation.

I know people are divided on their opinions of the Dune sequels but you know what, it was fun and I really am excited to see what happens next
