4.25 stars. I thought Maybe You Should Talk to Someone by Lori Gottlieb was very well-written. I enjoyed the back-and-forth pattern of the author story/patient story and felt it made the book more balanced. As someone who has darkened the door of at least a dozen therapists over the last 35 years, the one thing that I appreciated the most about this book is that I felt it had a great chance to "normalize" the idea of therapy for people who have never experienced it. The first times I visited therapists in the 1980's, it was something one felt very ashamed of. You tried desperately to hide it from people around you because it meant there was something WRONG with you or that you were SCREWED-UP in some way. In spite of the strides the world has made, I believe there is still a stigma attached for many people. And, the story showing a variety of people (and therapists themselves) and the wide range of issues with which they want help may aid in the viewpoint some have about the profession and the act of speaking with a therapist -while making them laugh and cry in the same volume.

this book was SO enjoyable, chock-full of quotes of wisdom for everyday life and everyday problems. i don’t normally read memoirs but this is one to remember
