I found it brilliant how Lori Gottlieb structures her book to feel like the therapy sessions she is writing about. I found myself thinking "No! Stay with John until he opens up!" Or "Don't leave us hanging with Rita and Myron!" when she would change chapters and continue telling another part of her story. A brilliant structure for this kind of storytelling, and an engaging authorial voice. I cried at Julie's final chapter, and I found myself wishing I could see Rita's artwork or John's show to know these "characters" better.

Maybe You Should Talk to Someone is successful in blending the author's own experiences with concepts of talk therapy and how people relate on a base level, but as an experienced therapy-goer, it isn’t anything revolutionary. With the author depicting so many connections between her own life and her patients', it ended up running a little long and lacked focus. You can tell this started as personal ramblings on the subject (Gottlieb says so herself).

I heard the author on a recent podcast and loved the way she answered a lot of the concerns brought up. I had to read her book after listening to this podcast.

What a journey those pages have been in my life. The author has a way of capturing our emotions and making us part of each of the stories in this book. I cried, I laughed, I wanted to scream but most of the time I found myself asking. How does she always know what to say to her patients? How is she so eloquent?

I felt at the end of the this book I gained a lot of insight about having patience because every one in this world is fighting against something. It is time to be more compassionate.

This is such a beautiful and unique book. It is both bittersweet and powerful to know how much humans can hold and deal with in their lives. Seeing both the growth and intertwining happening throughout these individuals, their therapist, and the therapist’s therapist is extremely satisfying and encouraging. This was beautifully written in how everything was brought together progressing and delving deep at the same time. Humans are powerful, capable, and contain multitudes.

4.5 This was an easy read (in a good way). The author does a nice job of weaving stories together - her own, her therapist's, and her patients'. You learn a lot about therapy in a light-hearted way (not preachy), so whether you've been to therapy before, thought about going but never made it there, or never considered it, I'd say pick up this book.
