The poor man and his maid have their lives completely changed, after taking in a stray cat. The man is asked to create a religious painting and the cat is his muse.
Simple beautiful novel.

I liked learning about different stories told of Buddha, there was a good moral to the story, but best of all the book was only 87 pages. This was the 1931 winner of the Newbery Award and I can't see kids enjoying reading it....even if they were in to cats. The only people I see truly enjoying this are those studying religion, specifically Buddhism.

Newbery re-read. A little jewel box of a story. Basically the retelling of the life of Buddha or more particularly the death of Buddha, around the creation of a painting. Throughout it all we see it mirrored in the eyes of a cat. Apparently cats rebuffed the Buddha at his death, not something I know anything about. The ending was a bit more abrupt and subtle than I would have liked. But there was a reaching to it that I expect from a Newbery winner.

Ugh. Terribly dull, meandering, and pointless. For such a short book, I can't believe how long this felt. Obnoxious faux spiritualism is injected into this trite narrative. I'm pretty sure that you aren't supposed to laugh when the cat dies, but honestly I chortled out loud. I really hated the big twist at the end, it was so heavy handed and saccharine. YUCK!
