A really interesting premise, that quickly became flat and repetitive.

The start of this book is a bit like a collection of short stories which made it feel fast to get through. Later on the plot develops and we see how these stories are linked.

How women were written grated me, they were basically just there to gratify our main character and were weak, subservient and generally pathetic. So, if this is something that grates on you too either skip this book all together or try to keep in mind the time and culture within which this was written - hard as it may be.

Overall, a bizarre, often unsettling, yet often surprisingly funny book which will have you questioning things about life you may never have considered before.

There were some beautiful moments and some interesting chunks of writing that kept me going. Also this book sent me down a rabbit hole of research about the author. I couldn’t help but connect his story to the main character. All this kept me reading through the bad dialogue, blatant misogyny, and bad political takes. This wasn’t an enjoyable read for me but it was an interesting experience.

Convoluted and unexpected. This is what happens when an author shamelessly inserts themselves into their writing. Mindlessly shouts into the void about bureaucracy, women, and life while praising the manly, Macguyver-esque nature of the main character, Hanio. It was reasonably fun. The description of Hanio crying in the last 3 sentences was empathetic. But not worth so much discussion of suicide for my tastes. Like Taxi Driver without the point and death of the author. Better pulp has been written.
