Ella Enchanted, for me, is a hard book to review. It's tremendously written, aptly plotted, and yet the main character is so infinitely annoying that it eventually becomes hard to continue reading. The real staying power is from the collateral characters (the badly drawn love interest, the villainous, greedy sisters, Mandy, etc.), who manage to spruce up the fairy-tale-turned-upside-down plot devices, though the Ella-going-cognito sequence is great.

This was an imaginative and sweet retelling of the story of Cinderella, which I did not know when we started it. Ellie and I both enjoyed it a lot.

this was a sweet book- i feel like it definitely followed the original cinderella fairytale more than the movie adaptation did which was fun- i loved ella's sassy+spunky character too! anyway wish i read this as a kid 3.75 ⭐

reread for the first time since i was little! this was my favorite book when i was a kid. reading it today, i realized how intrinsically i know this book - i found myself expecting certain words and phrases, remembering descriptions of people and locations and gowns. i don't think there's another book i know this well, it feels like the back of my hand.

I loved this book when I was a child, and getting to re-read it as an adult was an absolute treat!
