Talk about an epic finale. I am exhausted from reading this book, and I wasn't even one of the highly capable warriors who suffered and struggled within its pages. But I mean that in the best possible way. From almost the very beginning, this story was a long, epic battle. John Gwynne managed to make each battle memorable and intense. I truly dreaded whenever enemies crossed paths and not knowing who would survive.
And that final battle... it was absolutely brutal in every possible way. I definitely raged at one particular moment. But I still loved it. The action, the pacing, the characters who charged into battle with next to no fear. Drem and Bleda are among my favourites, but Riv turned into one of the most powerful and fearsome warriors ever on the page.
I really loved how many of the character arcs closed out, and the side characters were each given moments to shine. Even the creatures had engaging character moments. This was a very intense read and I will not forget the ending any time soon.
This entire series is the definition of epic fantasy, and anyone who enjoys that genre will absolutely love this, especially those reminiscent of Viking and Saxon lore. A must own!
