This will always be an absolute classic for me. My first ever favourite book of all time and my first introduction to zombies which continue to scare the living shit out of me to this day. I vividly remembered so many parts and actually got a little emotional at seeing where I’d subconsciously carried some scenes in my heart. For example, I’ve always dreamed of having a bay window seat but never really thought about where that dream had come from (if it had even come from anywhere in particular). Reading this again it punched me right in the chest that THIS was where I got the idea from. That little lonely, frightened girl who was reading to escape the thought of going to her Dad’s house had taken comfort in the thought of a cosy room with a bay window seat and I was almost transported back to reading this for the first time. Goosebumps and this book in particular will always hold a special place in my heart.

Very surprised at the level of creepy scenes and gore, for a children’s book. The concept is super cool, and the twist isn’t hidden super well, but if you’re a kid, it would blow your mind. Super good start to the Goosebumps series. I thoroughly enjoyed this book.

Though I was about the right age for them when they first came out, I never read any of the Goosebumps books when I was a kid, although I do remember the TV show. At the time I was more interested in reading "grown up" books than anything marketed as for young adults. Recently however they came to my attention when I reading an article on writing for children that used them as an example of good clear, easy to follow stories. I figured I'd give them a go and see if they lived up to the hype, and starting with book one of the series.
Overall I must say I'm impressed, and I can see why kids love these books. The characters are well drawn and introduced, the tension is cracked up bit by bit - and although some of the "scares" are rather signposted, in a TV / Movie kind of way, I'm sure that for a 10 year old or so coming to the for the first time would get a kick out of them.
Also, the book is surprisingly gorry and doesn't shy away from some rather grizzly and horrific moments, which I was pleased by - it's not molly codling or condescending to younger readers.
Overall, I would recommend this to any young reader.

Though, I must say, the Poor Petey :'(

The Stephen King of children's literature, so I figured I would work my way through. A solid start that mixes zombie and vampire lore to delightful effect.

I didn't enjoy this much when I read it as a teenager, but I liked it much more this time around. A really fun story about death which is an odd thing to say, but I'm sticking to that. An impressive first book in the Goosebumps series.

the house being in a town called “dark falls” should have been their first sign.

this was perfectly creepy and gory! i forgot how much i loved goosebumps as a kid and i had so much fun reading this. i also remembered i had a whole collection of goosebumps books and now i don’t even know where they are anymore which sucks! i will definitely be reading more of these for spooky season i can’t wait!!

Amanda messed up at the end

Josh was just a little rat but he redeemed himself

Petey was a crusty little white dog but tolerable

In conclusion: Josh remains the only good character in this book - what a king
