My first Emma Hamm read and I found it very enjoyable! The world building was light but the characters were great. The love story had a different tone compared to other recent fantasy reads, which I liked a lot. The final act had some surprising twists which made an otherwise predictable ending more enjoyable and set up the next book nicely.

I freaking loved this book. I don’t even want to read the reviews that say this isn’t a five star choice. The goodreads rating is inaccurate to say the least. This was an easy page turner to be sure but the way my heart broke repeatedly for Abraxas all while falling in love with him… gotta say Lore better watch out bc I’m coming for him. So glad I already ordered the second book and it’s on its way to me.
I enjoyed the writing. I enjoyed the slow burn. The plot. The way Hamm makes us care so deeply for her characters. More. Please more. Many thanks more.

This was my first introduction to Emma Hamm’s writing and oh my goodness! This was an incredible book. She did such an amazing job with the world building, and I know that Fire Heart has only just scratched the surface of Umbra. I loved Lore and Abraxas as characters, and how deeply they felt for what was happing around them. Their relationship was humorous at times, and I enjoyed seeing it deepen. I also quite enjoyed Beauty’s character, and how Lore stood up for her at all times. I can’t wait to delve into book 2!

Fire Heart was the perfect start to a binge-able series. If you are a fan of dragons, fated mates, will-they-won't-they - this is just a treat. The world building isn't super complex, and the plot is twisty, but easy to follow. This series is a joy to read!

2 stars explanation: it was ok, I finished the book, but came close to DNFing it.
I really loved the idea behind this book (by that I mean the dragon!). Sadly the execution did not match my expectation. I prefer book with strong world building and complex characters arc. In this book a single city was sometime treated like it aught to be much bigger, which really confused me. As for the character arc it was slightly clumsy, sometime seeming almost instantaneous.
One thing that did really bother me was how much the main character hated on other women in the beginning of the books. I don’t have a specific quote the message was something along the line of “I’m so special, other women are so vapid and just want a rich husband”. It was toned down toward the end, but still present.
Overall it’s an ok book but not great. It still made me want to continue the serie in the hope that it gets more fleshed out
