I love Leslie Wolf’s ability to craft such an unlikeable character! I’m always amazed by how much agency they exhibit in earning my attention. One of the characters in this story engineers her own conflict, causing her to be magnetic in my eyes. I loved watching her ruin her own life and, for me, it was the anticipation of what she was going to do next that propelled the plot forward…not necessarily the character many thought was driving the action. Sorry for the vague review…this is such a powerful and well-written book and I don’t want to give anything away for you.
I also love Wolfe’s plot twists. She’s a master of them. It’s not her actual twists that are mind bending, although they certainly are, but rather the set-up. When I finish one of her books I always find myself quietly pondering the big reveal and going back over the plot in my mind to think of clues I may have missed. I always give 5 stars to an author who can trip me up and mess with my perception of characters and actions. In this book, Wolfe gets all the stars for getting me MORE THAN ONCE!
Like a renowned surgeon, Wolfe has a tight grasp on her skills, making her an auto-read author. Her skills are well-honed and so perfectly utilized that readers won’t see the twists coming nor have time to ‘hate’ a character simply because they don’t like the personality or actions! An author who has the ability to create an unlikeable character and have me cheer them on, is most certainly gifted. You need to read this one to experience a master craftsperson at work. This is a novel I’ve already been telling everyone about - heaven help the next person who asks if I’ve read any good books lately! I could go on and on and on about what I loved about this book.

I love this book! I read it in two sittings, because I was forced to take a break. It’s intense, brilliant, and refreshing. I felt like this book would be a bit different right from the beginning. I was right! The characters are vivid, realistic with all their flaws, strong, and selfish.
In a way I can understand the motives behind all of the characters’ actions, except The Mayor. Towards the end I start understanding him as well. It is interesting to see how people are obsessed with the same thing from the past, but the reasons are different.
Leslie Wolfe is a skilled author, and I find this to be her best writing yet.

I thoroughly enjoyed this read!
I love a story where medical and legal fields collide but this more personal side of it with a great twist at the end had me fully enthralled.

Paula and Derreck need to rot in hell, such ugly people
honestly, it did pick up a lot right around the middle of the book! the second half flew & i found myself loving the plot twists.. good read especially for people who’re interested in medicine - super accurate yet understandable terms. really liked this book from such a small author!!
I wanted to love this book, a cardiothoracic surgeon and thriller. But it fell flat. Even the twist at the end didn’t intrigue me
2.5? I was really into this because I wanted to know what the f was going on, but then that it was just another “crazy lady” throwing everything away for a guy she’s having an affair with annoyed me but still wanted to find it all out. Then to find out the sister connection somehow made it all worse, I don’t even think it was necessary at all. I mean why would she want to destroy the sister (Anne) so bad when it was the parents who adopted her and one of them is still living? So I think just a jealous lover revenge story would have made more sense. I do hope Anne kills her husband although I found her unlikeable too. Actually I found everyone unlikeable right down to the IMO creepy mom who lives with her son in law and daughter for no reason. All convoluted and far fetched. But close to being much better if you took out the bizarre sister twist.
⭐⭐⭐.5
I've never punched a book before, now I can say I have! Paulas character threw me of the edge! Don't get me wrong, Derrek was trash for his affair. But Paula, and not knowing until the last couple chapters why she was after Anne ease a little bit of my hate for her.
