Things I liked:
Recognizing when a conversation turns to silence or violence
Making others feel safe
Start with the heart - what do you really want end result? For you? For the other person?
We tell ourselves stories. The other person has no clue about them. We are reacting to our own story. Stick to the facts.
Consideration given that we won’t be perfect at these skills, but trying is the best place to start.

What I didn’t like:
Nothing really. I’d recommend this book to others.

This book screamed white man privilege in a way I had never experienced before.

it was very informative, but i felt like the message was just getting repetitive as i continued reading it. but still, it was very enlightening :))

and this was my first book!

I found the book enlightening and reflective. When important conversations arise it’s easy for emotions to get in the way.  This book provides the tools to realise when this is happening, and how to return to ‘effective communication’. Examples are great and book is easy to read. Will definitely look to use what I’ve learnt from the book in professional and personal relationships.

Excellent instruction manual on how to deal with difficult conversations, with tips such as "start with heart" to be clear on what you want for yourself, for others and for the relationship. I have already started to apply the principles with promising results, and will continue to do so.
