I’ve become a big fan of Deon Meyer’s writing! Meyer sets scenes and gives life to characters with a winning combination of dialogue (using wide variations of Cape Town/Afrikaans dialects) and apt descriptions. Each character becomes cemented in my mind soon after the book begins and it’s a delight to watch them interact with each other as the plot unfolds. Captain Benny Griessel, is the main protagonist in Cobra. He is brilliant, troubled and battling alcoholism. Griessel works alongside two other ‘Hawk team’ inspectors, Vaughn Cupido, a Cape coloured and the handbag wielding Zulu Mbali to make sense of the death of a heavily body-guarded English mathematician, a mass shooting at a mall and the kidnapping of a young female medical student.

Michael Connelly says Deon Meyer is an "unsung master" of the mystery genre. He's right. I won a copy of his latest book The Last Hunt and it was so good, I ordered all of the other books in the Benny Griessel series.

A British mathematician is kidnapped. His rent-a -bodyguards are killed. He is in South Africa. Benny and his team get the call to figure out what has happened. Meanwhile, a pickpocket gets caught up in the kidnapping and throws a serious monkey wrench into the cops' attempt to locate the mathematician. Throw in spies, corrupt cops, and hired assassins, and you've got one hell of a thrill ride.

The plot is not one that relies on twists and turns, but one that relies on good old fashioned police procedure. I thoroughly enjoyed this book. I plan to read the rest of the books in the series. If you are a fan of good mysteries, you will like these books. Bonus - at the end the book is a glossary of terms that people use in South Africa. Very helpful. I also found it quite amusing that they call car horns "hooters." Despite the international setting, like any good police procedural, you forget that it takes place elsewhere and get sucked into character and plot. You will not be disappointed with Deon Meyer.

Lots of thrills and action along with the usual fascinating South African setting and great characters but the plot was a bit thin.

Fast paced, well-written, and South African to the bone. I love this guy's books! If you enjoy a good procedural, you'll like this - but if you're not from SA, be prepared to use the glossary when engaging with the local slang.

Exciting, fast paced, interesting story line, great characters.

What more is there to say? If you haven't read Deon Meyer, then you are missing out.

Had no idea this was part of a series, but I'm pretty sure I've met Benny Griessel before, and look forward to seeing him again.

Sudáfrica como un lugar diferente a lo que venden los medios, mucho más real.
