These Hollow Vows 🗡

“I can't even tell someone to have a good day without sounding like I secretly wish they'd die” - Lexi Ryan ☠️

⭐️⭐️⭐️💫 3.5 Stars

This was a tricky one to rate. It took me over a month to finish, but I’m not sure how much of it was the book or me/me having covid. I wouldn’t say this book is anything new - but if you’re into ACOTAR, it’s worth picking up. 👍🏻

Abriella was your classic ‘not like other girls’, red headed thief of a woman. She did get a bit of development throughout the book which is always good. Which leads us to Seb and Finn. You guessed it, one long term friend with sunshine hair and one dark, mysterious fellow. Both essential to the story progression, but they were very predictable. I wanted more depth, I think they could’ve been used WAY more to drive the story. 📖

The first half of this book felt easy enough to read with the short chapters but it didn’t grasp me, I didn’t feel the urge to pick it up. The second half however, I read in a day. I LOVED where the story went, there were a couple of things I didn’t expect and the magic finally made sense. ✨

The ending made me really want to read the next book, I just wish we’d had a bit of that sparkle earlier on. 💕

Moral of the story, it's spelled "Man"ipulation for a reason. Brie deserves an Anti-hero arc. I support women's rights, but more importantly I support women's wrongs.

My eyes rolled so many times while reading this, I was afraid they wouldn’t return to their positions. I mean, I’m glad the main character has powers, otherwise she would be dead in the first page. That’s probably because she was all hormones and no brain. Honestly, I think her sister was more intelligent than her. The sister should probably be in charge. They would probably be in a much better place. Speaking of intelligence, clearly that was rare in that world cause they would lie to each other, know the other person lied, but oh let me tell them a very important secret because I trust them..I read it till the end and it did not get better. And no, it’s not a me problem, I’m sorry. Why create a love triangle if the connection between the main character and the first love was so strong? It was such an unnecessary plot line . And I am only angry cause this had somethings that were cool. But then everything would be less important because one fae had silver eyes and the other had abs. I apologise for my English.I don’t want to be bothered with this book any longer to even reread my own review.

Overall I wasn’t really a fan, I liked the premise as I tend to like these sort of faire ya novels. However I just felt like the book was very similar to acotar but it wasn’t as well written as Sarah j Mass.

The start was very fast paced which I normally enjoy but I feel like I didn’t have enough time to care for the main character.

In regards to characters I didn’t really like Brie as I felt she was trying too hard to be like other girls, but did t really have a personality? It’s mentioned she likes reading towards the middle of the book, but it seems like it’s only used as a plot point, not really part of her character. It the start it also had a seen where she is a thief but it doesn’t really go in depth explaining how she got her skills and is not truely mentioned much, and as a thief she isn’t as subtle as I would think, therefore this seems to only be a trait added that wasn’t really thought through. Overall I thought Brie was very one dimensional and superficial.

Towards the love interests I don’t really have anything to say they seemed like the typical love interests in these sort of books.

In regards to plot I wasn’t that interested however the last 100 pages it started to pick up a bit so I enjoyed it a bit more.

Also wanted to comment that for a book the revolves around magic the magic system wasn’t very well explained and the rules seemed to contradict themselves quite a bit. The system just seemed to change whenever needed to benefit the characters. For example the goblins needing a price for information but answering many questions for one lock of hair? It just seemed like Brie needed to know something and the author couldn’t figure out another way of getting it to her.

No hate to the author just my opinion.
