I loved this book so much and the main characters were the sweetest, realest, most vulnerable people. The ending made me sad and was unsatisfying to say the least. I wish there was another book about these characters.

I still loved this book and once I picked it up, I wasn’t able to put it down.

A nice quiet little story about a handful of young adults (literal adults) who are taking a gap-year and exploring life together in a foreign country. Explores different cultures (both eastern and western) and how we look at immigrant peoples, as well as how difficult it is to learn to get along in a new country (especially when you're just learning the language--or when none of the multiple languages spoken are your home language). Takes a look at family history, heritage, tradition, and expectations. There are a lot of big themes covered in a small amount of space and sometimes I wish they had been threaded a little more carefully. However, as it stands, the story and characters feel genuine and realistic.

This made me cry! I thought it was just going to be about one girl but we follow her two new friends as well and see what their reasons are for going to Japan. I loved seeing the girls try to find their own path, make their own way in life, learn new languages, find friends and love, and more. The art was also very pretty and I love the style.
Oh, and I liked how we got to see both English and the language the girls/boys were talking in.

this book is gorgeous, both in storytelling and art. the characters are crafted so meticulously, and the story truly flows from who they are and what they want. it’s warm and organic and absolutely worth a read.

Holy shit this was incredible 😭

The way the author depicted language and culture through this project - GENIUS.

I felt every emotion.

A wonderful graphic novel! Beautiful and funny art, an engrossing story, fantastic characters...I might just have to buy this. Definitely teared up a few times.

I loved this and I want to read it again immediately.

The main characters in the book are united by their time in Japan and their Asian heritage, but they are very different in many ways. I appreciated the exploration of communication between people from different cultures, including the differences in their honesty and forthrightness.

The inclusion of each character's backstory and point-of-view chapters adds a lot of dynamic and depth to each character, including the neighbor lady!
