DNF at chapter 11. I'd heard a lot about this but was extremely disappointed. Why start with a premise of kidnapping, imprisonment, and nonconsensual surgery if what you want to write is a wholesome story of newly-out trans girls hanging out and comforting each other and flirting bashfully? Why insist that (almost) all your characters have Done Terrible Things if you aren't willing to actually follow through on that in any meaningful way? I suppose it's possible Greaves just painted herself into a corner since this was originally a serialized work. But also, the way Greaves talks about Good People vs Bad People, about transition as a hard break with your past self, and in particular about passing, really rubs me the wrong way and feels totally different from how I think about ethics and trans identity.
bad bad bad. tension-less, overwritten, under-edited. did not critique the systems it tried to in any meaningful way that lasted thru the slog of the latter 66% of this book.

The premise of this book is pretty insane, but the characters are very good, and the deconstruction of gender is amazing. Also contains the best description of what gender dysphoria feels like I’ve ever read. I will say the AO3/fan fic serial writing style took a minute to adjust to and is not my favorite but the book is too good not to give 5 stars to anyways.
