To me this isn’t really a crazy woman even though that’s what readers seem to gauge from it (and it’s why I read it).. because we don’t get any internal dialogue we can only assume her motivations. I interpreted this as a distressing metaphor for loneliness and how having a job just makes u wanna kill urself sometimes lol. That’s a pretty universal experience, but since the corporate world has convinced us that the way we live is normal, anyone who is deviating will be perceived as crazy, and I guess that’s why this book is considered a crazy girl book? When I think crazy girl I think Lisa Rowe.. when I think of this girl I think she’s just sad, creative, and out of options.
Lise is a predator preying on the perfect predator. It’s not the right predator if he likes being the predator. She is emotional and flighty when she realizes the men she stumbles upon only want to be violent towards her in a steadfast way. If suicide was simply a predator, she’d be dead already. She wants the person who kills her to kill her unwillingly, which maybe shows how unwilling she is to die too. This predator needs to be as unsure as suicide itself is. Her actions show the constant give and take between the desire to die but the desire to be saved.
Putting that choice into someone else’s hands puts her in community with that person and brings emotional vulnerability that her corporate life makes impossible. Now, her life is in both of their hands. It also plays on the gender dynamics of the time, Lise probably hearing stories Cinderella and Snow White growing up. She’s getting the answer to whether or not a man will be her happily ever after, which is an obvious priority for her considering how focused she is on the men in her vicinity and if they are paying attention to her. She’s in her 30s and still living the depressing 9 to 5 life, so it’s also a case of a casualty in the Sexual Revolution of the 60s. I mean she literally gets tear gassed by student protesters- this movement has scorned her because now she’s getting older and because the times have changed, her opportunities for happiness are scarcer.
This book was all about confusion. Where am I going? Who am I looking for? What do I want in my journey, and in my partner? Do I want to be alive? Lise is the stereotypical compulsive liar and spontaneous traveler- but there’s really nothing outlandish or psycho about the way she ends her life. It’s kinda smart, but more than anything just sad. At least in her final moments she could have Intimacy with another person on her terms, which is meaningful and heroic considering everything else seems to be out of her control.
