I really enjoyed this book. The author took a unique approach and created a story around the practically non-existent character of the father in the book Little Women. She told the story of what happened to him as a chaplain/abolitionist in the Civil War.

At times, this book was graphic and sad but I don't think you can write a book about war and not take on those characteristics. I really enjoyed reading a piece of historical fiction from a man's perspective, as I tend to read female perspective historical fiction.

March follows the father of the women of "Little Women" as he meets his wife and eventually goes off to fight for the North in the Civil War. Unfortunately, although well written, I'm not particularly fond of Civil War books, and Mr. March is a difficult main character to follow. It is harder to write an unlikable main character (or a complex main character) which Geraldine Brooks did very well. Unfortunately that meant reading March was frustrating and a bit too melodramatic for my personal taste.

As someone who loves Little Women, this was a fun book that explored the father's back story. Talked about his youth and also experience as a chaplain during civil war. This was also the first book I've read that gave a different perspective about the civil war experience- I didn't know about contraband workers or leading out plantations. It also reinforced that I really like Geraldine Brooks and she has a great imagination when writing historical fiction.
