My book club selected this book, and I was not a fan because I'm wary of contemporary fiction based on literature (which is why I won't read any of the contemporary books based on Pride and Prejudice!). However this was a really engaging book and I'm now a big fan of Geraldine Brooks.
Interesting to read need to read little women to learn more about characters

A slender book about guilt, idealism, the lies we tell and truths we avoid, set during the US civil war in the context of the March family at the heart of Louisa May Alcott's novel 'Little Women'. I liked it but wasn't really moved.
It did take a while to get into it but I'm glad I did read it. Not my favorite of the 3 fiction books she's written. My favorite is Year of Wonders although People of the Book was pretty darn good too.
Heartbreaking and wonderful. Leaves me with so many feelings to sort out. And now I must reread Little Women to look at Marmee anew.
A great take on the March family. A clever approach to what was going on during the Little Women storytelling. I especially liked the portrayal of Marmie and how feisty she is / was. She showed her true colors when they dated and stayed true to them throughout. A positive look at women and how silenced they were even when doing the heavy lifting. Both black and white. Great read
Ugh! It doesn't matter if you are a brilliant writer you don't mess with the essence of a classic literary figure. Brooks I feel took to many liberties with her story and changed our beloved Mr. March. If you are a die-hard Alcott fan, like me, walk away now.
