The is a novella. None of the characters are named. The narrator is a man who has been very successful in business. This success has come at the expense of spending time with his son. The narrator is kind of hard to like. Because of his success, he considers himself better than most people. He thinks most people just live their lives and don't really leave a mark when they die. The narrator prides himself on being one of the few who does leave a mark. As the book goes on, he makes a very difficult decision. This is an old reference, but the narrator reminds me of the protagonist in the Harry Chapin song "Cat's in the Cradle". I enjoyed the book.

Thought it was an okay novella. I’m not sure if it was the writing or the translation, but I felt a little too lost for the first 20 or so pages, which has a big impact when that’s a third of the book 😂
I previously read And Every Morning The Way Home Gets Longer and Longer and enjoyed that one much more and would recommend that one over this one.

I could not stand this main character or the motivations for his decisions, but the story still got me to cry. Bravo, Backman. Bravo.

"This has always been your town in a way it never was for me; you never tried to find a life, you were in the right place from the start."

This was so short and yet it was so sad?? Fredrick Backman has a great talent for making things so sweet and tender and then completely heartbreaking. I love it so much.
