A grim noire potboiler whose surprise twists aren’t very.

Hard-boiled noir, didn't live up to my expectations. The prose is good, but the gory voodoo elements are over-the-top and comical rather than scary. There is a very creepy, off-putting vibe in the main character's lusting after a West Indian 17-year old. He (middle-aged detective) is especially pleased when she is dressed in her Catholic school uniform and looks like a little girl, and describes her as a dish to be enjoyed. Blech. Put me off the whole book.

although I went with no real expectations of what to expect with this book, it was fairly disappointing in all honesty. interactions between characters felt one dimensional, the whole private investigator thing is something I can't stand because its so cliche and overdone. the plot really didnt interest me at all.

Watched the movie years ago and reading the book made me want to watch it again. Movie is superior to book - book is more like ‘1950’s movie detective’ with some dark twists that you don’t see coming…unless you already saw movie.
The movie has much darker overall atmosphere and more emotional impact. Louis Cyphre is way more scary in the movie. And having plot partly in New Orleans works better I think.
Novel is still worth a read and interesting to see how author (who also wrote screenplay) can tell the same story in two different ways for different media - both good in their own way.
