Something completely different from what I usually read. But I definitely liked it. It was more on the slow side and I don't think I fully grasped the layers and message. But I understood enough to enjoy it.

This book deserves negative numbers for the review, I wish I could give it a -58 stars. Truly one of the worst books I've ever read. I find it very problematic and harmful to a lot of communities, this was clearly born from the ignorance of the author. I wish I could get back the time I wasted reading this book.

Questo libro è uscito nel 2008, quando avevo 11 anni, e anche allora avevo provato a leggerlo. Non ero riuscita ad andare oltre le prime 50 pagine, probabilmente perché mi rivedevo fin troppo, anche al tempo, nel personaggio di Mattia e non ero pronta ad ammetterlo.

La storia segue Mattia e Alice, dapprima bambini, poi adolescenti e adulti che condividono un dolore nato durante l'infanzia. Ciò che capita ad ognuno è diverso, ma sembra avere lo stesso impatto. Nel corso delle pagine seguiamo le loro vite, piene di silenzi e di parole non dette, di amicizie e di amori che svaniscono perché tutto li riconduce sempre insieme.
Partendo dai personaggi, posso dire che ho trovato Alice eccessivamente insopportabile. Fin da ragazzina, ha esposto questo suo carattere estremamente egoista, non tanto per quello è che il fulcro del suo personaggio, ma proprio nelle piccole azioni che fa. In Mattia, invece, mi sono molto rivista: nelle sue scelte di vita, nelle sue azioni e nelle sue decisioni. Nonostante ciò, nemmeno lui è da considerarsi un personaggio "positivo" perché come Alice ha le sue problematiche.
Le tematiche del libro sembrano essere poche ma vengono riprese durante tutta la storia. La principale tematica è quella della salute mentale, tematica che si fa prominente nei due protagonisti. Sfortunatamente, però, ho trovato che non fosse abbastanza analizzata: un po' come tutto il libro e i suoi personaggi, un sacco di emozioni o spiegazioni sono lasciate alla libera interpretazione del lettore.

Per esempio, da dove deriva l'anoressia di Alice? Sappiamo bene che Mattia tende a farsi del male a causa del suo passato ma Alice? So che non ci deve sempre essere una spiegazione chiara, ma non c'è nessun accenno a qualche minima cosa.

 
La seconda parte del libro, quella che ha a che fare con l'età adulta, mi è sembrata molto più debole rispetto alla prima parte. Verso la fine, poi, aveva iniziato a rialzarsi ma il libro si è concluso in una maniera coerente per i personaggi e la storia, ma che lascia il lettore con l'amaro in bocca. E' uno di quei finali dove vorresti buttare il libro a terra perché il personaggio x ti ha fatto incazzare e perché alla fine non si sa nulla.

In generale, l'ho trovata una lettura che mi ha preso: volevo sempre andare avanti e scoprire di più sui personaggi. Mi sono affezionata a Mattia e anche al personaggio di Denis, di cui avrei voluto sapere di più. Nonostante ciò, il libro ha le sue pecche soprattutto nelle tematiche, ma forse è qualcosa di comprensibile per un libro scritto nel 2008.
