epic conclusion to an amazing series. I cannot wait to read all the side character stories. Also I never thought I could like Hugh but I love thinking of him and Kate as kind of siblings. I think he will be a cool uncle. Also I always knew dragons were amazing but dang!

Original read Sept 2018 but GR has a weird end date listed. I gave it 5 stars and no review... I don't remember but wondering if it has been lost...

Oh well, re-read Feb 2024 and a strange thing has happened. I kept asking myself if I have read this book before because it felt fresh and new. I forgot the particulars- bad Krista.

Here we go! Highlights and spoilers.
Kate with a baby- these are precious. I could have highlighted the first few chapters they were so good:
“Huny.” Conlan sniffled.
“I don’t negotiate with terrorists. Oatmeal or nothing.”
----------
That was the only way to keep Conlan out of the bathroom. He kept trying to eat soap and then cried when he realized it didn’t taste delicious.

and there were a few editing snafu's, Conlan was 13 months then 18 months then 13. But we forgive and move on :)

Kate is a working Mom:
I hung up and lunged forward just as Conlan jumped off the truck. He landed in my arms and giggled. My son, the daredevil. It’s good that I have a short reaction time.
I hugged him and smooched his forehead. “Let’s go get dressed. We’ve got to save Uncle Nick Stupidhead from himself.”

Erra is now family:
“The Wild is unpredictable,” Erra said.
“I’ve had a trying couple of days,” I told her. “Normally I love listening to a blistering lecture on my failure to choose a proper husband. It’s my absolute favorite. But if you don’t stop, I will put your dagger into the stables.”
Erra fixed me with her stare. “Sometimes I despair at your lack of respect.”

Once again, Kate is facing an impossible situation and Curran is off up to some kind of mischief with Erra (becoming a god! so he can save Kate from herself) when Conlan decides to SHIFT. Hijinks ensue.

At Cutting Edge, loved this:
My son shrugged the shreds of his clothes off himself and showed Robert his lion fangs. “Rawrrawrrr!”
“Is he challenging me?” Robert’s eyes sparkled. I put my hand over my face.
“Rawrwrwa!”
“That’s the most adorable thing I’ve ever seen.”

Saiman makes an appearance:
“What do you think that was all about?” Curran asked.
“I think he’s scared of my father. He wants revenge.”
“Think he’ll sell us out?”
“No. Besides, if you can’t trust an ice giant driving a creeper van with a dead body inside, who can you trust?”
Curran chuckled.

Julie has a lot of behind the scenes machinations in this story, she is SO the same smart ass:
“Be careful,” I told her.
“I was planning on blundering straight into danger without any preparation, but now that you told me, I will totally be careful.”

Curran:
“I won’t stop you,” he said. “It’s your life. It’s your choice what you do with it. I’ve tried to stop you from doing things in the past, and it’s never worked. It’s pointless. You will do what you will do.”
I had expected a fight. This was too easy.
He gave me his Beast Lord stare. “But if I agree to this, you have to accept that I will do everything in my power to make sure things don’t go that far.”
“Including becoming a god.”
“Including that. I needed an upgrade. This was the only way to get it.”
“But you’re not you, Curran.”
He grinned, showing me his teeth. “Still me.”
-------------
He pulled me to him, wrapping his arms around me, and inhaled my scent. “I’ll never let you go.” I put my face into the crook of his neck.
“You have to.”
“No.” He kissed my hair. “You and me, Kate. We’re forever. Conlan will grow up and go his own way, and you and I will still be here, squabbling over who is going to save whom.”

The new threat is Neig (dragon) and they are trying to get everyone involved to help save Atlanta from this new threat:
“I am the Grand Magus. I won’t be spoken to like this!”
The table erupted in screams.
“I’ll speak to you however I please!” Luther shot back.
“You’re a loose cannon, Luther!” Phillip shook his finger at him.
“It’s Dr. Loose Cannon to you!”

Kate and Hugh get the opportunity to mend fences in an interesting chain of events (Elara is the grease to make that wheel move). Since Christopher has a strong point about forgiveness, Kate decides to look at it a different way.
"I can’t change what I did. I can only go forward and try to do better. I’ll always be a killer. I like it. You’ll always be a bastard. There is a part of you that enjoys kicking the door in and throwing a severed head on the table.”

Currans response to forgiveness for Hugh:
“You tend to give people second chances. And third. And fourth.”
“Pot, kettle. Can you work with him?”
He shrugged. “We need him and his wife. I can always kill him later.” His Furriness, the Long-term Planner.

A HUGE battle happens, as it should after all this build-up, and I still hate Roland for arriving late and causing lots of excellent characters to die but at least he showed up. There were painful losses (Adora, Saiman) but maybe they can get peace for a little while. And talks about another baby!!!

I LOVE how this story wrapped up, Roland in a place where he can see his family and they visit him safely. And Julie with Erra:
“What’s our first stop?” Julie asked.
“Mishmar. I have a promise to keep to my mother.”
“If Kate is my mother, does that make you my grand-aunt?”
“Possibly.”
“That’s sort of like a grandmother, isn’t it?”
“Yes.”
“Can I call you Granny?”
“Not if you want to keep your teeth.”

I can’t believe this series is over! Especially with that epilogue. I’m so distraught after obsessively reading all things Kate Daniels, I need a month of recovery time.

This book didn’t feel like a conclusion to me, not really. But I loved it all the same. Things came full circle in many different ways and also left things open for possible future installments (which I will be praying hard for)! This series will forever be a top fave of mine!

This was the absolute best ending for this series. Nothing I can write will add to the (I am certain) numerous accolades. So I will simply say, thank you IA and GA for giving us a series that can be read and re-read for years. Kate Daniels is the benchmark for excellent Action/Adventure/Fantasy series.

L’affrontement final était dingue et épique, ni trop long ni trop court.

Magic Triumphs is a worthy ending to the series.
I cried a lot. Their happy ending is hard won.
But I'm also very happy that Conlan is written developmentally correct and how seamlessly he integrates into the story. He's the absolute cutest.
