Interestingly this is almost the same plot as Cage of Souls. A not very guilty person ends up in prison and negotiates the perils of corrupt guards and impossible overlords with the help of unconsidered people from the periphery of the world. Instead of an exhausted eco-system and lost science this story is propelled by magic and some of the artificial creatures created by it.
The view of the future in Cage of Souls is very bleak indeed whereas this novella, presumably aimed at a YA audience, is more upbeat. It's an enjoyable and involving read.

A fun fantasy heist story. The little golem characters were neat, the plot was interesting, I liked the stylish prose, and the story gave enough details of the setting that I'd love to read more.

An imaginative little story about a small people trying to get a foot in in a gigantic world of humans and magic and about a girl that makes puppets.
Tchaikovsky has easily become a sure way to find an interesting read for me.
Not even 200 pages and still a picture painted of a world with many varied characters and their fates.

Super cool little novella, wished it was a bit longer and there was more information on the magic system in place, but really good!
Also, love the cover of this book, its what drew me to it in the first place.

I've had trouble focusing on books lately, so I'm not sure I was really able to do this novella justice. The worldbuilding was cool, and I loved Tchaikovsky's take on the homunculi, but the characters and plot didn't quite grab my attention in the way that I wanted it to. Most novellas I blast through in a single day, and this one I spread out over three days because I just didn't feel a lot of urgency to finish it. Again, maybe it's me, maybe it's the book, maybe it's both, but I wasn't as drawn in as I wanted to be.
