It is pure magic that a novella can come with a complete world, compelling characters, and lots of action. Not a word was wasted.

In a world ruled by thieves or magicians, an orphan survives with the help of her friends, who just happen to be magical homunculus.

I will have a more in-depth review on my blog in March 2023

Really enjoyed the world building and am fully invested in Tef and Coppelia.

I liked how the story was dark, but not too dark - I guess kind of a foggy grey where it's creepy enough to give you a touch of chill
Spoiler(the automaton, in particular. I don't why, but the scene where it was disassembling kind of got to me)
.

SpoilerI didn't think Coppelia would be caught or that Auntie would die in the heist (what a surprise that was). And I also didn't think the homunculi would show themselves either, but needs must and Coppelia needed saving!

I wonder if her parents are still alive...

I enjoyed this; Tchaikovsky's flexibility and world building are excellent, and this novella showed his capabilities well. It's a fantasy novel; set in a city and world where magic is common, and power magic users dominate. The protagonist is a young thief and puppeteer who has small, living, animated puppets that help her. She becomes drawn into a heist whose consequences change the city's power balance. A pleasure to read.

Make sure you check out "Precious Little Things" as well, which is effectively a prequel with different characters.
