Considering how ‘topical’ transness is in today’s media circus, to read such a variety of historical accounts of trans lives at how connected they are over hundreds of years was incredible, even if fictionalised.

In fact, I kept forgetting that these were short stories based on archival data and found myself googling the named individuals repeatedly. I guess that’s a testament to Jacques’ talents as a writer.

Interesting to see transness through the ages. This is definitely not a happy book, but I think it displays the hardships of being trans well. It was nice to also read some bits of gender euphoria.

The format of this book is very innovative and diverse. It is, however, a bit of a pity that it is not clear what parts are fiction and what is history. Still, I overall think this book is a good choice for everyone wanting to learn about what trans people have to face every day, how things have changed over time, and how they haven't.

Interesting to reflect on historical queer and trans figures – both the similarities we share and how far we've come since they were alive. Lots of beautiful and inspiring stories.
