Some interesting ideas and lots of practical advice about improving focus and concentration. I thought it would be a bit of a slog but by a third of the way through, when Newport starts to get specific and practical, the pace picked up. It will take some creative thinking to work out how to apply his tips to some jobs/pastimes but for those in the areas he mentions most (academia, tech/software) it seems like really helpful advice.

3.5 - It has some really good ideas in here that I want to implement within my own life, but he relies a bit too much on correlation equaling causation for some arguments and toots his own horn too often.

4 stars if read after Digital Minimalism by Cal Newport
Book spends a lot of time justifying why "deep work" is needed. If you subscribe to the philosophy early on, it becomes repetitive. How to apply is a smaller portion but still offers some really good options/choices to implement. However, the choices don't really explain how to overcome pitfalls when trying to implement the options/choices. You gain some pitfall remedies if you read Cal's Digital Minimalism first.

Lots of useful tips and tricks in this book on how to work deeply. Even before reading this book I was interested in the idea of working more deeply, particularly as I have limited time to work on my doctorate during any given day, so any time spent working on it has to be effective. However, having read this book, I am most put out that I don't have a secluded soundproof room from which I can work like one of the peeps in Newport's book. I want.

I had this amazing book in the TBR list as I have been worried about myself losing the ability to concentrate and spending too much time in shallow online distractions.
My time management skills were about to go to the drain when I finally picked up the first page.
While this essay doesn't have any magical remedy to my productivity issues, it is a great text on why deep work is essential. It gives you tips and the right steps to change your life and routines to embrace the change. I will try my best to adopt them into my crazy life
