I feel that this story is very well written and I see how it is beloved by so many. At the same time I never need to read a story that focuses on black women written by a white woman. This book makes all black women mammy caricatures to the protagonist. It also seems to rely on learning that black people are as beautiful and cultured as white people as a way to stop racism.

This is a gripping novel centred on strong women. However, it suffers from a naive goal of colourblindness and distributing the complexity of a real person into three Black sisters, each with only one major quality distinct from the rest.

The writing is beautiful and the story moves at a very nice pace, all of the characters are well written. But it is clear that although race being a central theme of the book, it is written by a white author to leave a white audience feeling good rather than focusing on the harsh realities of the south in the 60s.
