I got this in my Book Riot Horror Box and devoured it today. The story is interesting and really creepy, and the art is excellent -- lots of blood and monsters. I especially loved the five afterwords (one for each of the issues in this trade) by Scott Snyder. The background and context he gives made this a four-star review instead of a three-star review.

I liked that one of the protagonists is a teenage girl, but this is really Charlie's journey. I hope that wherever Snyder, Jock, Hollingsworth, and Robins take the story next, Sailor is the focus.

5/5 for the artwork. Stunning, chilling, with such frenzied detail.

5/5 for the story. The opening is brutal and throws you straight into a world where witches are real and once you're pledged, you're pledged, there is no escape. Your fate? To be cooked slowly inside giant cauldron, buried deep beneath the earth hidden in the roots of a poisoned tree, before being consumed, flesh from bone.

A brief synopsis:

13-year-old Sail, her comic book writing father and wheelchair bound mother move to the remote town of Litchfield, escaping a dark past and tragic memories. Unbeknown to them they have emerged into an even more dangerous situation. No-one can be trusted and a dark an evil force is waiting to swallow them whole and wipe every trace of them from human memory.

A must for fans of horror and the supernatural.

Overall this graphic novel was more gore filled than spooky. I do give credit to the type of witch conjured up by the writer; Definitely not your typical green skinned, broom riding kind of witch! Illustrations were absolutely gorgeous, although the paint splatter was a bit much on a couple scenes. It made it difficult to see what was going on clearly. Regardless, I'm looking forward to the next volume! I would love to learn more about what's going on in Sailor's head.

Great, scary story. Leaves you wanting more. Could've been a 200 pg novel.
