I don't know which BookTok account recommended this to me but if I find out who it was it's ON SIGHT. I wish I DNF'd this book. It was not for me. I'm usually a fan of fantasy even if it's cheesy. But this was the bad kind of cheesy. I actually think cheesy would be an improvement on what this book was. First things first, I caught a typo early on which is already an ick for me. Then, the world building was bad and didn't work for me. There were way too many things brought up that were never explained. It was written like a fairy tale but then the author threw in vampires?? Why? It didn’t make sense. Way too many characters that had no purpose. The whole book felt like a prologue for the series but was giving absolutely nothing. Everything was blurry. I should be able to picture the world that I'm reading about. There was just too much going on in this book but was also somehow so boring??? And our main character, Miss Evangeline Fox, was insanely predictable and naive. The more I write, the more I’m mad that I read this

4,5 stars.
Jacks. That’s all. Thanks.
And the reason it’s not getting 5 stars is because I’m fucking pissed I don’t have the second book, and that it’s coming out in almost a year.
Edit: scratch that, it’s getting 5 stars. Fucking Jacks.

yet another lovely book by stephanie garber. i love how she has the ability to make genuinely interesting characters. i for one know that i love jacks; not bc he’s so charming, but bc he is so beautifully and tragically written.

as always, beautiful descriptions, beautiful poetry, beautiful storyline. only this author can think of a story as interesting as this. i certainly loved it.

i enjoyed reading this book! looking forward to reading the next one <3

now, upcoming are my favorite quotes/moments!

Heroes don’t get happy endings. They give them to other people.

-

Dear Jacks,
I was only trying to be polite. It’s a shame you’re so used to conniving and deception that you cannot even recognize courtesy. Not all of us rely on manipulation to get what we want.

-

“Hurt is what made me.”

-

“Coward,” she coughed.

Two sharp eyes slid her way. “What was that?”

“Nothing,” Evangeline murmured.

-

Or have you already forgotten the way heartbreak rips apart the soul piece by piece, how it turns you into a masochist, making you long for the thing that just eviscerated you until there’s nothing left of you to be destroyed?

-

“How about I name her for you? What do you think of Princess of the Fluffikins?”

“Don’t ever say that again.”

-

Evangeline found herself tangled up in a hug that she hadn’t realized she’d needed. Without any shoes on, LaLa was more than several inches shorter than Evangeline, but her hug could not have been mightier. “You won’t regret being my friend. We make excellent allies, you’ll see!”

-

“Stop flashing your fangs. I’m the only one who gets to bite her.”

-

“He just said sexy scars,” Jacks drawled. “Are you really listening to this?”
