Okay, Devney, WHAT THE HELL?

This book was shaping up to be my most favorite in the series. Beau had usurped Silas as my favorite (which I thought was absolutely impossible) and I was over the moon. And then, bam. You ruined it.

Two thirty-something-year-olds who clearly love each other both decide to not communicate and split up for SEVEN MONTHS?! Without a word?! Please. No. Just NO! And then. AND THEN! You are really trying to tell me that it took Henry pointing out to her that Beau loved her for her to clue in that it was true? She never had even an INKLING? What a bunch of horse dung. I’m so livid. This is either completely unrealistic or senselessly stupid. Either way. This section of the book can piss all the way off.

I mean, yes, they worked it out. They both agreed to move wherever. Blah blah blah. But what the heck was that huge gap in their relationship for? So unnecessary. If they were so in love—WHICH THEY BOTH WERE—that amount of time would not have gone down that way. I can’t even. If I didn’t love the rest of the dang book—and Beau—so much, this book would definitely be 2-3 stars.

Mafia mixed with small town goodness? This book was amazing and it was not what I was expecting from this book at all. Sabrina has to go into hiding after writing to expose the Russian mafia so she must go to her best friend Felicity in Montana. She is then taken by Beau to a tiny cabin in the middle of the words to keep her safe but it becomes incredibly difficult to deny their chemistry.

Beau was an ultimate MMC, all he wanted to do was always protect Sabrina, something happens and he always comes running! He absolutely melted my heart he was a soft boy he adores his woman, mother and sister which is hard to find in romance books these days. He respects Sabrinas boundaries and strength and never oversteps.

Sabrina was such an amazing FMC to read about, she was strong, independent and has so much personality behind her. I loved her so much I could read more books about her and Beau because they were just so fun. The epilogue was so freaking cute but also I love that this set up the first book of the Clifton Forge series.

Tropes: forced proximity, opposites attract, slow burn angsty
Triggers: violence, gun violence, trauma, depression, attempted rape

The Coppersmith Farmhouse: ⭐⭐
The Clover Chapel:⭐⭐⭐⭐.5
The Lucky Heart:⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
The Outpost: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
The Bitterroot Inn: ⭐⭐⭐⭐

One of my plans for 2024? One Devney read a month and this is the pick for January.

This is the first series apart from the Edens (for no reason other than I've been obsessed with them and couldn't imagine reading about any of her other characters) and I found myself getting caught up in what Devney does so well: crafting flawed MCs with realistic meet-ups and rocky starts to relationships.

Our FMC Sabrina is having a bit of a crisis - she never stopped to ask herself what her determination to break the story would look like aside from bringing criminals to their knees. The unfortunate reality of her situation is that while she's called out the bad guys (and almost got beat to d* in the process), she's also put a huge mark on her back and the people she loves. She does a lot of self reflection on what she wants from her life as well as some analysis on what her sacrifices have cost her, both physically and emotionally.

Beau, the local hero-turned-host, is another DP MMC who you just can't help but love. He's a protector, quick to anger when it comes to those he deems to be part of his tribe, and this instantly includes Sabrina. His POV highlights how hard it is for him to keep Sabrina at arms length; not only does he find her incredibly physically attractive, his admiration for her bravery and determination to nab the bad guys is the ultimate foundation for his feelings towards her. And that more than anything is why he knows they shouldn't give into their attraction to each other - she thrives in the city and he could never leave his family and the community that counts on him behind.

Overall, I loved the interactions between Sabrina and Beau - the tension that builds and finally culminates is, as always, absolutely perfect. I thought the way they continued to misunderstand each other and then find themselves talking through it was so refreshing. I don't hate a miscommunication trope but I LOVE IT when they communicate and only become closer as a result.

If you like:
- romantic suspense and hideaways in the artistic Montanan wilderness
- when the MCs are honest about the end-date of their situationship and proclaim that since they understand the timeline, no one's feelings will get hurt (insert side eye here)
- HEAs that feel worthy of the journey both the characters had to go on in order to be with the one person they've decided they can't live without..
.. snag this one up. I'm going to keep on my one-DP read a month plan, but I'm also going back to weave in the rest of the stories in this series.

This was a good read - I liked the characters, including the secondary characters and I enjoyed the relationship between Sabrina and Beau. The suspense with the goings on with the Federov's added a little something extra to the storyline which was great, as I've been loving mystery/suspense books lately. I liked how this one finished up, how the characters were mostly good at communication throughout the book as well. Would recommend.

I didn’t like Sabrina for lying to Beau over and over about being totally against moving to Montana, thus Deeply disappointing him over and over. Why the hell not just be honest with the man? Jeez. I found the pacing to be slow. Though I found both Sabrina and Beau to be a bit hard headed at times, I absolutely loved Beau. He was selfless, always there for her, and a total sweetheart. I mean, the guy practically gave up his beloved dog to her so Sabrina wouldn’t be at the outpost alone when he wasn’t there.
