Audiobook narrated by Kerry Better.

A fun and thoughtful book. Though clearly a children's book, at no point did I feel it was patronising or childish. The narrator did an amazing job and added to the experience.

The good:
- An interesting and enjoyable story that was encapsulated well.
- There was good character development and growth.
- The switches back to the past were well done and I enjoyed learning the tidbits that then later tied into the story.
- The narrative did an amazing job. I especially enjoyed the way they gave each character their own tone of voice so you knew who was speaking even without being told.

What could have been better:
- Some of the characters lacked depth beyond their immediate purpose to the story. The antagonists were only really that, not people with thought and backgrounds of their own.

Overall I had a really fun time listening to Holes and it was a nice palate cleanser after some heavier books.

Had such an enjoyable experience re-reading this book as an adult, the first time being when I was at school for English class. It is just as wonderful as I remember, and I immediately wanted to go back to the start and read the whole thing again once I finished. Louis Sachar does a great job with painting a picture with his words, I had no trouble trying to imagine what the scene looked like. Sachar ties the plot together with ease, and every little detail weaves as one in the end - it's so clever. The characters are loveable but all have their flaws, Stanley and Zero's relationship is forever one of my favourites. Holes will be a book I will definitely return to again, I had so much fun reading this again - and unfortunately completed this quicker than I would've liked as I just couldn't put it down. I look forward to the next time I pick it up again! Deserves so much praise.
