Meh, I really liked a few sentences in this book. But, overall I just didn't buy into the story.

Nerissian's damaged characters are honest (or at least as honest as the can be) and don't demand our sympathy, yet we always seem to root for them to overcome their obstacles. Or, a self-sabotaging artist who never sees his own talent gives each of us, artists, hope. Yet, each decision he makes keeps him in his rut, in his unfortunate circumstances, in the shadow of success. I love the dirty New York City that is painted here; artists could afford lofts, you could live in your van, and you could squeak out just enough to get by on reselling used books. This captures a New York that no longer exists.
