It’s my first T. Kingfisher book and I was kind of disappointed… The writing is simplistic and verging on YA and there’s a very minimum level of detail; of the environment and description of the gloominess/despair, that left me uninterested. For what is a retelling of one of our greatest gothic short stories, there is a lack of suspense and care for the thematic narrative that made the original so well loved and interesting. This seemed more of an exercise in concept than a full fledged story ready to stand on its own as a published piece of work. Wish more was done with it.
