Here I'm happily enjoying a fluffy light silly romance when suddenly
Spoiler sounding
is dropped in .. O.O...and then before I know it my heart is all kinds of melting and broken just a little in the best way as Reese apparently can't help doing even in the simplest of stories. I laughed, I adored, my heart krackened a little (sorry not sorry :P ) , and I loved.

Don't bypass this book because of the fluff or insta-love that makes it seem like the story has nothing to say or the MCs won't grow or have depth. These characters work for their trust and HEA... Oh yea, don't forget the tentacles part!

Cute creature feature, but I'm not sure how I feel about the representation of indigenous peoples in this book. The tribe just seemed like a prop to me.

Tired of being treated so badly Declan decides to leave his latest boyfriend. Throwing everything that was important to him into the car he heads away from the city and the man he thought he loved. It may have not been the best idea, but it was the only one that Declan had at the moment. When the car breaks down in the middle on no where Declan has no choice but to look for help. He never expected it to be in a man named Geir. Could this stoic man be the one to help Declan in more than one way? Will he tire of Declan and his wants like everyone else before him or has Declan truly found the man of his dreams?

I really enjoyed Geir and Declan. Their story is both sweet and hot. Declan is one bundle of energy and Geir is the total opposite but the two soon find that each may be just what the other needs. I loved seeing the two work through their relationship and figure out what they each needed in it. As the two work through their own emotions we are also introduced to other shifters. Declan and Geir find that not only are their hearts on the line but also their lives. This story is much more than just a romance it shows us the importance of trust and friendship as well as love. The author weaves an engaging tale in a magical world. I was quickly pulled immersed into the story and loved all the characters. I cannot wait to see what happens next in this world.

It’s not so much that I didn’t like it, but that I wasn’t excited about it and the insta-love was a bit too quick for me.

Not sure I was prepared for tentacle sex, but here we are. This is a very *interesting* book. There are a few plot holes that don't ever get explained and some other just vaguely unbelievable things, beyong the shifting, like falling in love within an hour and one of the MCs just not being phased at all that the other MC is a kraken shifter.

Declan is leaving is his shitty boyfriend when his car breaks down in the middle of nowhere Ohio. He ends up wandering upon a house where a grumpy stoic man lives and finds himself a place to stay for the night. When his car ends up taking multiple days to finish, Declan has to figure some shit out. Luckily the man he stumbled upon, Geir, is pretty taken with him as soon as he meets him. Geir is a kraken and has been alive for centuries, yet no one has ever captured his attention in the way that Declan has, in all his femme-gay, adhd, overactive, and talkative glory. Declan soon figures out the Geir is a kraken and this moment was so weird for me. Like he really thought it was just cool and sexy and not terrifying or at least weird at all? wild.

Anyway, Geir lives on a plot of land and has a treaty with a Native American reservation that is a few miles away. Over the centuries Geir has aided them in protection and they have given him a space to be himself. This tribe is made up of shifters as well and they work together to keep themselves safe.

Rohahen and May are the absolute highlights of this book. Ro is one of the neighbors and his friendship with Declan was amazing and adorable and hilarious. May is a child with a traumatic past which led her to learn her shifting form early, like way early at 4 years old. She's an adorable fluffball of a kitten who gets into more trouble than one toddler should be able to, but she was precious.

I loved all the highly detailed descriptions of Indigenous customs and would love to see an own voices review. Reese Morrison has a lot of info in the authors note about their research process and sensitivity readers etc.

I only read "Hummingbird and Kraken" for one reason and one reason only: Reese Morrison wrote it.
Monsters and tentacles are not my usual kinks but instead of going in a darker direction, Reese chose instead to tell a really sweet story between two people that enjoy cooking and snuggling and are so perfectly matched for each other that that was all that mattered to me.
Declan in particular was a delightful and refreshing character to read about. Here is a gender non-conforming, very camp and feminine presenting young person that refuses to be treated as lesser and fights as dirty and hard as they feel is warranted. I loved that. I loved that they got to have a big bad boyfriend and that Geir knew that Declan would tell him if he needed him to intervene.
Also, let's applaud Geir who upon being faced with something he does not want to deal with simply goes to live at the bottom of a lake forever. That's the kind of life I want.
One of the best parts of this story was its secondary characters and how mindful and careful the author was of Native American costumes and traditions and how that added so much to the book and influenced the world-building. Race and gender in the Native American world were also discussed several times and deeply influenced the way the story was told instead of just presenting it through the European binary must of us were raised with.
Rohahen, in particular, stole the show in such a way that he got a short story of his own and I'm really looking forward to it.
I can barely wait for whatever Reese Morrison will gift us with next.
Thank you to Reese Morrison for this DRC.

This was not what I expected, it's a weird mix.

On the one hand, it's an interesting setup and overall has enough plot to keep me interested without overpowering the focus on the new relationship. On the other hand, the feelings that develop have little buildup and I did not feel the characters matched up very well.
Geir is an old kraken who has lived alone for a very long time. Declan is on a trip to find himself and stumbled upon Geir and falls head-over-heels. They have two very different personalities, one more talkative, the other more silent and I personally... did not feel they fit very well? Declan completely uproots his life before the story starts but we don't learn much about his past and he does not seem to regret a single decision. Geir has mostly removed himself from other people but immediately accepts and wants Declan in his house.
