My thanks to Tor Nightfire for sending me the ARC. I really enjoyed most of this book. If it wasn’t for the dog and the kid, I wouldn’t have gone lower than 4 stars.

That kid hid under the dashboard for days but pops up just in time to watch them having sex? Ugh. No thanks.

With the way the dog was written I expected him to die. He was definitely more plot device than character. My problem lies with the way he died. After risking their lives to save him (just to let him suffer in a hot car while bleeding out), they just shrug and leave. Maybe he was eaten, maybe he bled out in the grass, who knows. Not the characters, because they just left without looking back.

Honestly, I’d be less annoyed with the author if they’d just shot the dog when he lost his leg.

This was a compelling apocalypse novel. It has some really sensitive subject matter concerning a dog though, who is in distress almost the entire book and ends up getting injured
and unfortunately also does not have a happy ending
. It made it harder for me to really relax and enjoy this because I was very, very worried about the poor pooch.
