3.5 AVERAGE

I chuckled at the title when I looked at the book in the library. I assumed it was some crappy V.C. Andrews-wannabe with lots of incest and molestation, but skimming through it, I realized the writing was good and the characters seemed solid. I raced through it today because I didn't want to put it down. While washing my floors, I kept pausing to read just one more paragraph.

The story is about a young Mexican girl born with a very dark red birthmark from her shoulders to the back of her knees. She is treated badly because of it (and because she was the product of a rape) and eventually decides to go live "North" (Los Angeles). She meets a cunning old man in a mental hospital who steals her fake documents and won't give them back until she listens to his story. Some books begin strongly, like this one, and then lead to a different story that is boring and detracts from the beginning. Happily enough, both character's stories were entertaining and I just wanted to read more.

The ending is a bit unrealistic, true, but it was a great book.

Wow! This was nicely done, very fascinating and moving. The characters were wonderful and the relationships developed were great.

Mielenkiintoinen ja mukaansatempaava, mutta lässähti loppua kohden.

I really liked listening to this book. Senor peregrino's story was so facinating, I did not want him to stop talking. The conclution was very satisfying and while I saw somethings coming, it did not dampen my enjoyment of the story.

Banal and poorly written. Jamilet is on a handful of occasions described as "not like other girls", all characters under the age of forty are described by how hot our narrators think they are, and if you can't have the person you want, you might as well kill yourself. This reads like a Fabio novel wanting to be "The Sorrows of Young Werter", and the result is... not my cup of tea, is the polite way of saying it.
