*BEWARE POTENTIAL SPOILERS AS THIS BOOK WILL TOUCH ON THINGS THAT HAPPENED IN, “Hopeless”!

*Also look up trigger warnings before reading!

“Losing Hope”, was set in Holder’s perspective following the events that occurred throughout his life as well as in the first book, “Hopeless”. A tragic, heartbreaking story, and along the way finding his way back to the cherished person from his past.

I already fell in love with Holder’s character in, “Hopeless” but reading this book gave more insight into his life, as well as getting a different look into how he felt when he saw Hope get taken, to the loss of his twin sister, Les, and much more. Even before the following events of Les’s suicide, Holder wasn’t a stranger to loss due to the fact that he witnessed his best friend, Hope get taken right before his very eyes. The things that were talked about in this book were mentioned in, “Hopeless”, but obviously in, “Losing Hope”, you get a better and deeper understanding.

I genuinely got more of a better impression of Holder in this book. I mean I already loved Holder to begin with, but I felt like I was able to see more of his playful, charming, flirty side through his inner thoughts and how obsessed he was with Sky. Let’s be real, even before Holder realized that Sky really was Hope, he was already thinking to himself how much he was falling for her, couldn’t wait to imagine the day they’d get married, and enjoy all the wonderful firsts they’d have together. There was still the moments when Holder got smacked (metaphorically speaking) with the reminders of the loss of his sister and reliving the nightmare of losing Hope as a kid. The first book was told through Sky’s point of view so, with this book Holder was really digging deep into his emotional and mental state. In addition, with the letters he wrote to Les throughout the book gave insight into some significant details that we wouldn’t have known without this book.

One of the interesting things in this book was seeing the letters that Holder wrote to Les. For Holder, losing his twin sister was devastating, and regardless of how much time had passed, he still couldn’t get over the fact that he lost his best friend, his sister. Through the letters, it was almost therapeutic for Holder, it allowed him to “speak” to Les and keep her updated with whatever had been happening in his life. The letters also highlighted some details that you wouldn’t have known without reading this book such as, the reason why Holder goes by that name, specific moments with Sky that impacted him, and expressing his angry and grief to Les.

Before reading this book, I wasn’t sure what I would feel or if it would really be any different from the first book, but I was wrong. Yes, this book is essentially following along the events of what happened in the first book, but I would highly recommend you do read this book as it also introduced characters such as, Daniel who were barely mentioned in passing from the other book, but obviously his role plays a part in the series as well. In addition, Holder’s story in this book was an emotional rollercoaster, not exactly the same as what Sky ended up finding out about her life, but they’re both not strangers to tragedy, trauma, and loss.

Despite some of the heavy topics mentioned throughout the story, I loved seeing the development between Sky and Holder. Holder was the guy who felt like his life had no meaning anymore, everything kind of felt dull, but when meeting Sky, she light up his life, and brought him happiness, one he truly hadn’t experienced in a very long time. Likewise, Sky was going through the motions of her life, but with her unexpected meeting of Holder she was put through a range of emotions she had never felt before, it was both beautiful and scary for her.

This offered insight into Holder’s point of view and also provided some new scenes that weren’t in the first book. So in a way, it was nice getting new glimpses into Sky and Holder’s romance and of course significant moments. The book still tugged on my heartstrings and my heart broke for both Holder and Sky. Despite already knowing what happened based from the first book, I was still anxious and at the edge with worry for these characters. The ending was good in that it gave a sense of ease, new beginnings, and Holder finally coming to terms with everything. A sad, heartfelt, romance that Colleen did a lovely job creating.
