A hard book to rate, because it was entertaining, but also odd, and not always in a good way. While it almost felt like a race revenge fantasy, it also had some odd magical/mystical elements that I didn't know what to make of, since they were never addressed (or I missed it).

Nothing to do with the book just needed a more uplifting read.

This book is such a page-turner and also a gorgeously written broad allegory about generational racism and trauma and the enduring legacy of slavery and Jim Crow. The short chapters move very fast, and I was invested from the beginning; the mixture of detective thriller, ghost mystery, and character study is just engrossing. I devoured this and can’t wait to read more of his books.
