A huge improvement from the previous book. My one major complaint about this one (aside from the glaring, lovable plotholes scattered endearingly throughout the series) is that it really could have used comic relief and more space to process the high stakes action. Though, that makes sense in a way given that this was about unpacking Marco's trauma and how he uses humor as a defense mechanism. Gosh, I love the character development for Marco— truly one of the gifts of this series. Honestly I always begin Marco books with a bias against it because he's my least favorite character and then I end up loving those books. This book is no exception and if he is still my least favorite, it's only a testament to how well the other characters are written. Again, I do think there was a pacing problem with this book in terms of the action. That said, a wonderful read and a reassuring one at that, as the book before this had me worried the series had permanently lost its touch. This book shows that it definitely has not.
Oof, tough one. Probably the best Marco book so far. As the characters are more defined the storytelling is getting more sophisticated - we can see when they’re lying to themselves. These books are hella sad.
Marco's story is always the most compelling. Some moments I wished would have been focused on more. The uncertainty and the inner turmoil about Visser One and the Leeran (at the end) should have been 10 pages and not two paragraphs.
I love Marco's intelligence and his humour, and I love his narration because we get to find out what goes on behind the one-liners. His books are some of my faves to read.
