The Escape

I must say, despite being written for children I still enjoy rereading these. Maybe it's just the nostalgia, the pop culture references from the 90s bringing me back to a time of youth and innocence. You would think a time would come when the innocence of youth, for the characters, and in this case, Marco, would be all but wiped out, but no, there is hope. There is always hope no matter how dark things get.

It never ceases to amaze me, the topics these books cover, the depth and maturity of the stories while paradoxically maintaining an appeal to young readers, the moral lessons, the heart ache and violence, the darkness of it all. And yet there is hope.

In many ways these books offer up great lessons to children. To love and have been loved lets us hold hope in our hearts, in our future. A mere glimmer, a mere hint of hope, can get a person through lifes most nightmarish trials, if only we allow ourselves the benefit of the doubt, that while the happy ending may seem dismally afar, there is some sliver of chance, some inkling of possibility, that the future may not always be dark and glum.

This is a book about pain, and sorrow, hope and love, about the past, present, and hopefulness of a positove future. For a childrens book it certainly has a depth one may not expect, beneath the whimsy of Marco's childish humor. Beneath it all, there is hope.

I wish we got wayyyyy more Visser One

The return of Marco's mom and Marco having to make some grade A agonizing choices, an attempt to make sharks into Controllers using an amphibian frog alien psychic race that will come into play in another three books, and the start of everyone's mental issues starting to peek out. Wheeeeeeee!

If I were a shark I would simply not be distracted by the smell of blood

Marco has my least favorite personality, so I'm always ready to dislike his books--and then I don't. His personality is counterbalanced, and drawn into question, by his angst; and the poor communication that this identity crisis fosters still annoys me, but I appreciate the intent. The shark plot here feels like a natural progression from the horses in the previous book, and it--and the underwater setting--is a great image; but it comes too soon after, and so is dulled by redundancy.

Marco just use your words.
