A swoony, apocalpytic romance full of fierce heart!

Found family, enemies to lovers, epic battle, saving the city… but a great doom to come, lost powers. I ate this book up. I can’t wait for the next one.

I think there are good 3-star books and bad 3-star books and this was definitely a GOOD one.
It’s been a while since I read a true YA Fantasy and they are always near and dear to my heart. I think YA Fantasy tends to focus more on the story and less on, well, everything else (ahem, smut), so you get a very plot-driven story.
It took me a little bit to get into this story but once I was in, I was committed. I think I read the majority of this book in a couple days. The pacing at the beginning was a little choppy but it had a lot of Lore to try and convey in a short period of time. The story had a lot of layers of history and I think it did a good job explaining it all in pieces to make it more coherent.
The characters were what really stole the show in this book. They were charming and clever and honest. I really liked the secondary characters and how they added more depth to the FMC.
Honestly, this book was a good solid 3-stars. A little iffy with some of the pacing and the story was a bit predictable, but I enjoyed reading it and am excited to see what happens in book two!

There's a lot I truly enjoyed about this book – but there are also some hallmark signs of its status as a debut novel.
I genuinely loved the Italian influences, the slow-burn romance, and some of the strong characters (especially Dante, whose back must be hurting from carrying so much of this story).
Is the world-building primarily done through info-dumps? Yes. Can I remember the names of any of the minor characters? No. But still, this was good fun, and the romance was addictive.
I was highly invested – up until the last few chapters. Without spoiling much, I can simply say that much of this book is building to a particular event – and that event was executed a bit amateurishly. I think we needed better pacing throughout the book, but also a better climax to leave us feeling satisfied (and eager to read book two).
Anyway, I can see why many people have loved This Vicious Grace, and I'm interested to see what Emily Theide has for us in the future!
