I first read this book when I was 14. I didn't get it. Like no shot. I was just trying to look smart by reading classic novels. I think I get it now though. Fitzgerald writes as impressionists paint. His conjured images are fuzzy, flowing, and full of feelings. Everything is enveloped with a faded glow of melancholy that is wholly immersive and dreamlike. This writing style fits the hedonistic party lifestyle that the novel deals with perfectly while supporting the reflective tone as well. I love the novel's conclusion about how money causes people to be childishly apathetic and put their blinders up to the problems that they cause with their recklessness. If you read this book in class and hated it, I encourage you to give it a second look with fresh, more mature eyes. Maybe you'll still hate it idk.

Moonlight. Obsession. Extravagant.

Reading this book felt like interacting with a slightly empty headed socialite from the 1920s who keeps flitting between conversations and dosen’t really pay attention to you.
It was very atmospheric and well written. I couldn’t predict how it would end and I was duly surprised. I liked the ending. Also, for the first half of the book I was very confused. And still am.

Half a star taken away from this masterpiece for the jarring and horrible racial slurs and sexism that cropped up on occasion.

Took until about page 140 for it to get interesting, but I did like the ending. Fitzgerald is a good writer, there are some beautiful sentences in there and he's good at writing flashbacks and other jumps through time. His characters are credible, but quite flat.

Ironically, Gatsby is presented as the mysterious one but you learn more about him than all other characters combined.
