Ich mochte Gill Hornbys Interpretation der Familiengeschichte Jane Austens sehr gerne. Was in den verbrannten Briefen stand bleibt historisch das Geheimnis der Beteiligten. Aber es macht Spaß sich zu fragen was so geheim gehalten werden sollte und warum Cassandra die Briefe nur ausgewählt der Nachwelt zur Verfügung gestellt hat.

Hornby hat meiner Meinung nach eine plausible Lösung für diese Lücken gefunden.

Mir gefiel vor allem wie die Beziehung der Schwestern beschrieben wurde. Man spürte wie nahe sie sich standen . Aber auch das es realistisch klingt, das Cassandra die Privatsphäre ihrer Familie vermutlich einfach schützen wollte. Die Überlieferung der erhaltenen Briefe hat schließlich maßgeblich zum heutigen Bild über die berühmte Autorin beigetragen.

Das Leben von Frauen in der Position der Austen Schwestern war geprägt von der Abhängigkeit der Verwandten. Auch darum geht es hier. Die Frauen in Jane Austens Romanen und ihre Entscheidungen zeugen eben so davon. Doch Hornby zeichnet hier vor allem was es bedeutete in Austens Stellung keinen Ehemann zu finden, keine Absicherung zu haben. Obwohl sie trotzdem in einem privilegierten Umfeld aufgewachsen ist.

Mir hat "Miss Austen" jedenfalls wirklich gut gefallen. Auch weil ich vorher kaum etwas über Cassandra Austen und auch generell der Verwandtschaft von Jane Austen wusste.

Letztendlich bleibt das Ganze natürlich ein Roman. Aber ein schöner^^

I really liked this! I think for most of it it was a 4 star but the last part just made it a 4.5 as it was very touching and thought provoking. It was kind of sad but that is just the facts of it, but i think gill hornby gave it a good spin that made it less tragic.
but i do feel so sorry for Cassandra she just went through so luc. I think i like her and find her more interesting than Jane!
I think it would be great to read shortly after Lucy Worsley's Jane Austen at Home, it has been a while but i do remember that it mentions many of the factual things that happens in thia book. Great exploration of Cassandras story, but i would have liked it to be a but longer i think and explore certain of plot points Cassandra's story.
