Long in parts, but overall very funny and compelling. 3.75. First detective novel ever written.

Collins's classic novel is exotic and romantic and thrilling, but the real brilliance is his characterization and how well he captures the human condition. Each narrator has a distinct voice and unique perspective on the events that unfold and on each other, and it is enlightening to see how the characters view themselves contrasted with how they are viewed by other narrators. A character study disguised as a mystery, Collins artfully infuses his tale with wildly exotic and fantastical elements that bring spice and romance to the nineteenth century English countryside - after all, what is more mystical than the theft of a famed, cursed, priceless Indian diamond?

Another one I listened to through Phoebe Reads a Mystery. I wasn't sure about this one at first - I thought [b:The Woman in White|5890|The Woman in White|Wilkie Collins|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1295661017l/5890._SY75_.jpg|1303710] was great, but lately I don't have the patience for Victorian novels, and I wasn't sure if I could keep track of all characters and plot twists on audio (I have a much better memory for that stuff reading than listening). But I ended up enjoying the mystery and admiring Collins' technique of changing narrators as served the plot. Some content is of the time in a bad way - exoticizing and stereotyping Indian characters, especially.
