Many years ago when I was wee, I was first introduced to this story through a abridged reenactment performed by Wishbone the dog. I enjoyed it back then and I've always wanted to get my hands on a copy and read it in its original incarnation. I was quite busy so I decided to hunt down the audiobook to listen to. I loved it but I want to track down text version to see if I enjoy even more when I can focus soley on it.

My only complaint about 'The Moonstone' is that I have waited this long to read it. This book was in all respects one of the most riveting and fabulous books I have ever read. Truly, truly wonderful.
I liked this book. As one of the forerunners of detective fiction, it does have the "whodunit" vibe, but at the same time, it's more than that. I also preferred the female protagonist (Rachel Verinder) to either Marian Halcombe or Laura Fairlie (from Collins' earlier work, Woman in White).

It is the problem of a certain section of Victoria literature to be excessively wordy, never writing a sentence where a chapter will do the job so much more thoroughly. Many writers were paid by the word so we can't blame them but it does mean that reading their books now can be a tiring affair as it was for me with The Moonstone.
This is often cited as the progenitor of the detective story and I see no reason to argue. When placed beside (for instance) one of Conan Doyle's Holmes novels it is three times the length and half as exciting.
For all that though it's a book worth persevering with, the final third being a superbly paced pay off to the lacklustre first four hundred pages!
