Hmm - there were things I enjoyed about this book - the window into life into the 1850s - for example. There were other things I hated - too much suspense and dragging out the story with unnecessary detail.

Having said that - it got better toward the end so I am glad I persevered.

This is the first Wilkie Collins book for me. I was very pleasantly surprised and wonder why I had not read any of his books before now. Though perhaps a little long, I enjoyed and way this book was written, especially through the personal accounts and perspectives of the different characters. The mystery was good and keep me interested throughout the book. I found it very interesting to read one of the first books of its type. Also the author conveyed snippets of what life and society was like at that time.

Una lectura muy entretenida y que cumple manteniendo el interés y el tiempo suspense hasta casi el final de la novela. A priori el estilo de la obra que gira en torno a la narración de varios personajes puede disgustarnos pero con el paso de las páginas dota al libro de un estilo único. Cada narrador es completamente distinto y su enfoque de la historia es también distinto. Con este truco el autor consigue mantenernos intrigados y en cierto modo engañados hasta el último tercio de la novela donde el ritmo se acelera hasta el desenlace final que aunque en cierto modo previsible no defrauda.
Si no le doy 5 estrellas es porque como novela de suspense le falta algo más.
Su fama como novela precursora del género de suspense o policíaco creo que es merecido. Ese sargento cuff casi recuerda a Sherlock Holmes y el mayordomo cumple su papel como un proto-Watson.
