This is one of the first detective stories, although the detective isn't one of the main narrators and isn't even in a good chunk of the book. The story is told through eye witness accounts of multiple narrators, each with distinct personalities and biases. This made it hard to solve the mystery and kept the story interesting. It did drag a bit for me during Miss Clack's narration, partly because she was so awful and partly because it seemed to get a little repetitive. There was also frustrating behavior that made it seem melodramatic until the end and then it makes sense. The last 100 or so pages flew by.

A little roundabout but the ending was a surprise. I wonder if people were more dramatic in the mid 1800s or whether it’s a literary technique…

Speaking of drama, this book features: a stolen gem with a curse, unrequited love, requited but suspicious love, a detective that just knows things, a daffy butler and an international plot.

No wonder the book is so long.
